9/24/2023 0 Comments Does turf burn ruin tattoosAfter meeting Saul Goodman, Skyler concocts a plan to feasibly launder Walter's money through a car wash where he had recently worked part time. She also begins getting involved in Walter's criminal life, using his money to pay for her brother-in-law Hank's medical bills following an attack on his life. Yet, when Walter implores her to understand his reasons for manufacturing meth, Skyler relents in her opposition to his presence within their home. In season 3, she deduces that Walter is a drug dealer, resolving to divorce him and keep him away from their children. Skyler and Walt's marriage becomes increasingly strained due to his unexplained absences and bizarre behavior, ultimately leading to their separation. Skyler and Walter have a son, Walter Jr., and an infant daughter, Holly. She has had several meager sources of income: writing short stories, selling items on eBay, working as a bookkeeper, and ultimately helping her husband launder money. Skyler White ( née Lambert) (played by Anna Gunn) is Walter's wife. Walt's descent, Macbeth-like, into the criminal underworld unearths immense levels of deeply repressed ambition, rage, resentment, vanity, and an increasing ruthlessness which alienates him from his family and colleagues. He also comes to find his new status as a drug lord psychologically rewarding, leading him to become increasingly willing to resort to criminal acts such as theft, extortion, money laundering, depraved indifference, and murder. Walt is initially squeamish about the use of violence, but gradually comes to see it as a necessity. His crystal meth, which is given the street name "Blue Sky", dominates the market, leading to confrontations with established drug makers and dealers. To avoid the tedious collection of pseudoephedrine required for production, Walt devises an alternative chemical process utilizing methylamine, giving his product a distinctive blue color. Walt's scientific knowledge and dedication to quality leads him to produce crystal meth that is purer and more potent than any competitors'. Knowing nothing about the drug trade, he enlists the aid of his former student, Jesse Pinkman, to sell the meth he produces. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, he starts manufacturing methamphetamine to provide for his family upon his death. Walter Hartwell White (also known by his clandestine alias Heisenberg) (played by Bryan Cranston) is an overqualified high school chemistry teacher from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Given the data-intensive process, this approach has not looked at the evolution of global emissions. To the extent that micro-level data are available, this method is the best way to measure global carbon inequality associated with individual ‘consumption’. These surveys are linked to Environmental Multi-Regional Input-Output models (EMRIOs) to provide estimates of energy consumption or emissions per consumption group. 8, 13, 14 that mobilize the large set of consumption surveys available from the World Bank Global Consumption Database, as well as additional consumer expenditure surveys done in rich countries. ‘Bottom-up’ approaches use household-level microdata to produce macroestimates. There are two broad approaches to the measurement of global carbon inequality. The three decades saw critical shifts in the distribution of world economic growth 12, which have not been systematically studied from the point of view of GHG emissions inequality. Third, the paper focuses on the distribution of emissions over the 1990–2019 period, that is, from the first Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report to the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic. Second, the method developed allows explicitly distinguishing between emissions from private consumption and investments, making it possible to better understand the drivers of emissions among wealthy groups. The methodology therefore makes it possible to track individual GHG emission levels with more precision than previous longitudinal carbon inequality estimates 9. These economic inequality data are combined with GHG footprints from input-output models thanks to a newly assembled set of country-level information on the link between individual emissions, consumption and income in more than 100 countries. Compared with previous work on global carbon inequality 7, 8, 9, 10, this paper presents three major developments in terms of data, methods and scope.įirst, the paper uses novel income and wealth inequality data from the World Inequality Database 11 to track inequality from the bottom to the top of the distribution. This paper addresses these issues by harnessing recent conceptual and empirical progress in the measurement of income, wealth and GHG emissions. This jeopardizes any efforts towards sustainable lifestyles. As a matter of fact, researchers, policymakers and civil society struggle to establish even basic facts about which groups of the population contribute to emissions growth, or mitigation. To properly understand the relationship between economic inequality and climate change, sound and timely data about the distribution of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions between individuals and across the globe are needed. These findings have implications for contemporary debates on fair climate policies and stress the need for governments to develop better data on individual emissions to monitor progress towards sustainable lifestyles.Ĭlimate change and economic inequalities are among the most pressing challenges of our times, and they are interrelated: failure to contain climate change is likely to exacerbate inequalities within and between countries 1, 2, 3, 4 and economic inequalities within countries tend to slow the implementation of climate policies 5, 6. Finally, the bulk of total emissions from the global top 1% of the world population comes from their investments rather than from their consumption. Contrary to the situation in 1990, 63% of the global inequality in individual emissions is now due to a gap between low and high emitters within countries rather than between countries. While per-capita emissions of the global top 1% increased since 1990, emissions from low- and middle-income groups within rich countries declined. Since 1990, the bottom 50% of the world population has been responsible for only 16% of all emissions growth, whereas the top 1% has been responsible for 23% of the total. In my benchmark estimates, I find that the bottom 50% of the world population emitted 12% of global emissions in 2019, whereas the top 10% emitted 48% of the total. Here I estimate the global inequality of individual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 19 using a newly assembled dataset of income and wealth inequality, environmental input-output tables and a framework differentiating emissions from consumption and investments. All humans contribute to climate change but not equally. Hariri: This study describes four patients with chronic lung disease that was ultimately associated with e-cigarette use. Q: Can you describe your recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine? With chronic disease, it can be even more challenging to establish a relationship between an injurious agent and disease due to the longer time lag. As we saw with the EVALI epidemic, it took a while to find an association between vitamin E acetate, which was being used to cut vaping fluid products, and EVALI. Hariri: Any time you look at an association between a toxic agent and chronic abnormality, it's challenging because you must establish a temporal relationship and thoroughly evaluate all other potential causes of the abnormality. Q: Why are adverse reactions to toxic agents, such as e-cigarettes, difficult to diagnose? From a scientific and epidemiologic perspective, there is a heavy focus on this topic because there is no data to support that vaping is a safe alternative compared to combustible cigarette smoking, or to better understand what the risks are for those who vape. The EVALI epidemic encouraged many individuals to investigate the long- and short-term risks of vaping. Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC reported over 2,800 hospitalized e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) cases or deaths in the U.S., illustrating that vaping use was not "safe" or without risks. However, it's clear that many vaping products are now being used by younger age groups, including at the middle and high school level. Hariri: E-cigarettes were initially developed as a safe, alternative method to help people to quit traditional combustible cigarette smoking. Q: Why are the health risks of e-cigarettes and vaping being increasingly investigated? Hariri discusses how this study paves the way to further understanding the health risks of vaping. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine Evidence, determined that vaping was the most likely cause of chronic lung disease in all patients, revealing a histological pattern of small airway–centered fibrosis. Hariri, MD, PhD, pulmonary pathologist in the Department of Pathology and Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and colleagues recently investigated four patients diagnosed with chronic lung disease. There’s a difference between telling me a lot of people are in danger and the decision I am about to make will impact the lives of more than 100 people. My biggest issue lies with the subtitles, which often disappear entirely or don’t match the spoken dialogue in ways that either reveal information that changed my moral calculus or were just jarring. There are no graphics settings aside from resolution, and it runs locked at 30 frames per second (though it dipped significantly below that when a lot was happening on screen), but Resurgence looks good enough that I doubt many people will notice. The PC version also has some technical issues. Most times, the tricorder segments work well enough, but when you get stuck it can become frustrating. In a small environment with a lot of scannable objects this can mean the tricorder is constantly beeping, which isn’t really helpful. Resurgence tries to help you out by having the tricorder beep when you’re near something that can be scanned, but it doesn’t distinguish between something that can be scanned and something you already have scanned. What you need to scan isn’t always obvious, and there were times I spent a few minutes wandering around the same room looking for the last piece of information I needed. The only annoyance among them is the tricorder segments, which ask you to scan objects to solve puzzles. Best of all, these segments are never one-offs, so you’re building skills that can be used in more difficult, stressful scenarios later on. I particularly enjoyed the flying and shooting segments because they required me to make quick decisions. There’s a lot of variety here: you’ll fly shuttles, fire phasers, command the Resolute from the bridge, solve engineering puzzles, scan things with your tricorder, and sneak around hostile environments, and nearly all of it is engaging and feels like what we should be doing in a Star Trek game. Of course, all of those dialogue options and moral dilemmas are broken up by Resurgence’s moment-to-moment action, which is respectable. But the lack of meaningful consequences made them feel like filler in hindsight. I don’t regret the choices I made they were set up extremely well and emotionally effective when I made them. Later on, the group’s leader thanked me for my choice – and then didn’t really appear again, even when it would have made sense for them to do so. The decision felt awful (in a good way) – there was no good choice – but I did what I thought was right and what the character I was playing would do. Ultimately, I had to choose between gravely injuring one of my crew members and potentially sacrificing that group. In one extreme example I was sent to rescue a group of people by beaming them away from impending disaster. That’s inevitable in a game like Resurgence – the story has to continue no matter what you do – but it never feels good when it happens. Sometimes, you’ll make what feels like an important decision only to realize later that it didn’t matter much. That said, I do wish the consequences of certain choices had more effect on the story. Better still, I felt I understood Jara and Carter more because I had just as much time to work through the issues as they did. The timer was fast enough to make me think on my feet but not so overwhelming that I felt paralyzed by indecision. Sometimes it’s fast and sometimes it’s slow, but you have to respond – or not, but choosing not to decide is a choice in and of itself.I never felt rushed during big moments, but I knew I had to be decisive – and so did the characters I was controlling. You’ll have to make these choices quickly, too, because you’re on a timer. How well you do as Carter affects what happens to the ship, but the decisions you make as Jara affect Carter if something goes wrong. In one early scene, Carter is out on the ship’s hull repairing a critical system, while Jara is on the bridge. Jara and Carter rarely directly interact with one another but both of them play important roles in the story, and Dramatic Labs does a good job showing how the decisions made by one of them can impact the other. It gives you a better idea of the stakes for everyone aboard – problems apply to more than the folks on the bridge, who knew! – and makes scenarios more exciting. Other times it means rerouting power to a critical system or taking a spacewalk to repair the Resolute. Sometimes, that means giving orders from the bridge or leading an away team. The perspective effectively bounces between Jara and Carter depending on the situation. Their newest creation: The Bacon Smokehouse, a rendition of sandwiches with bacon onion sauce, thick cut Applewood smoked bacon, fried onion strings, sharp white cheddar cheese, and sweet mustard sauce. Since two out of the three Maple Bacon Dijon sandwiches were a flop, McDonald’s figured they would try again. What’s The Latest From Signature Crafted Sandwiches? It tasted like a confused Quarter Pounder.Īs for the Maple Bacon – we’d gladly offer the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken a B, the Artisan Grilled Chicken a C, and the 100% Beef a D. The 100% Beef patty, on the other hand, didn’t lack flavor – but its flavors didn’t seem cohesive. The Grilled Chicken paled in comparison to the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken, lacking moisture and flavor. While it was a valiant effort, the other two Signature Crafted Sandwiches didn’t have the same effect. Artisan Grilled Chicken and 100% Beef, Not So Much That didn’t sit well with us, but it also wouldn’t keep us from ordering another one. Add fries and a soda, and you’ve pretty much hit your daily calorie limit with just one meal. With the highest calorie count out of all the Signature Crafted Sandwiches, the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken has 740 calories, 35 grams of fat, and 69 grams of carbs. Where has McDonald’s been hiding this chicken all these years?Īs usual, quality fast food comes with a price. It’s nothing like the molded (sometimes rubbery) patty used in the McChicken – but it’s tender, juicy, and fried to light, crispy perfection. The Buttermilk Crispy Chicken was, by far, the favorite sandwich. But combined with the meat, bread, and piled-up fixins, we found it quite pleasant overall – with just enough heat and sweet. The Dijon sauce was a sweet, earthy concoction that was a little overly tangy. (When it comes to fast food, oblivion is always the way to go.) Someone pointed out that the fatty bites of bacon had the same texture as the onions, so if you pretend that’s what you’re chewing on, it’s much more palatable. The bacon was rather fatty in all three sandwiches, but the smoky-sweet maple flavor was delicious. A couple of us thought they were actually pretty good. You must be wondering – did the Maple Bacon Dijon pass muster with our taste testers? The general consensus was that the Maple Bacon Dijon sandwiches are not bad at all. But resolving these uncertainties for you is our job, so the $5.19 a pop was worth it. Very few McDonald’s menu items carry such a hefty price tag. However – we were skeptical of the Maple Bacon Dijon. Does anything shout “Millennial” more than words like “artisan” and “crafted?” We think not. You even get to choose your bread: a classic Sesame Seed Bun or an “Artisan Roll.” The sweet ’n’ savory sandwich is piled with thick-cut Applewood smoked bacon with sweet maple seasoning, grilled onions, white cheddar cheese, Dijon sauce, and lettuce. With maple, bacon, and Dijon, the sandwiches were introduced on the market last year, offered in three variations: Buttermilk Crispy Chicken, Artisan Grilled Chicken, and a 100% Beef quarter-pound patty. Their sophisticated, daring flavor combination, of course. What was a burger restaurant to do? Offer something so different, so Insta-worthy, and so delicious that the young generation would have to try it out (and SnapChat about it).Įnter the Maple Bacon Dijon Signature Crafted Sandwiches. With aging Millennials came Instagram celebrities, ridesharing, and the outlandish desire to ditch the grease-soaked fast food and opt for fresher, higher quality options. The cause? A lagging demographic from no one other than the infamous generation of Millennials (who’s surprised?). After years of catering to the busy worker, the mom with a car full of hungry kids, and the broke college student, the fast food joint noticed a loss of profit.
